What I...
What I Wear on my Feet
When I think of a selfie, my mind often goes right to social media, places where you see everyone from celebrities to the common citizen sharing what they do in their pastime, or a photo of their face after it's been put together by makeup. Though in these terms the selfie might be something that seems to have low impact, through my life I have seen how the selfie helps people raise awareness for important causes in a way that can connect to a large, younger demographic. For example, in my own life, I have learned a lot about Ukraine and the distress it has had on people my age, all through the selfie. Two years ago, a local family took in a Ukrainian exchange student. As time went on, and the violence in Ukraine worsened, and Diana was stuck hours from home in a. small town where she knew very few. Through her devastation, Diana used her social media to highlight all the damage in her hometown by posting selfies of her in Ukraine before the war, and pictures in the same exact location with the destruction of the bombing that had happened in her home. Not only did this help us as a community support her emotionally, but also helped her raise over $80,000 to try to get her grandmother to the United States and out of danger. So, thought the selfie may be used to capture mundane tasks and fun vacations, it has also helped bring a community together and potentially save a life.

I like the photos you chose and I think that was a unique take on the "What I..." prompt. The summary of the girl in Ukraine documenting photos of the war is also a powerful concept of selfies.

DeleteI like that you shared a story about how selfies can be impactful on a community and bring awareness as well as simply record mundane events. -Lauren
ReplyDeleteAmanda, your post has definitely brought my attention to something that was never crossed my mind before when thinking about a selfie. My mind also jumps straight to social media, whether it be snapchat, instagram or Be Real, when thinking about a selfie. Especially nowadays, selfies can be used as a form of communication. Your story you shared about the Ukrainian girl was very inspiring, I love how your community came together and helped support her. This story reminded me of a girl from my hometown who is preparing to get a heart transplant. She runs a instagram account where she posts selfies of herself and a comment of what she has done a certain day in preparation for her surgery. She uses the account as a way to keep her family and friends updated on her journey.

I like the decision you made to do a what I wear on my feet. I thought it was very outside of the box. I enjoyed reading your reflection and connection to this post I feel that it evoked thought. I thought that using something like the blog platform to explain about this situation in a community was a great idea. -Hayden
ReplyDeleteThere's some great variety in shoe and sock choice. personally I'm a one shoe pair wearer until they need to be replaced but I really enjoy having fun socks to pair with the one pair of shoes I wear. My favorite socks are my toucan pair, narwhal pair, and cup of noodles pair. Also I enjoyed how your reflection highlighted the potential good social media can have as opposed to the downsides it has (which I think are even more often highlighted).

I loved the summary on the girl in Ukraine, because it is always amazing to see the power of social media. I also liked that you even chose to be detailed and show your change in socks.
